Apparently roughly this time last year I was fixing the Citroen (fixed the rust, drove for a year, now has hydraulic leak that needs to be fixed), contemplating powdercoating the Jag’s wheels (never got round to that) and mucking about making alloy inlet trumpets for the Spitfire (gave up on that. TIG welding thinwall alloy tube is hard). What about you oppo?

Basically rambled about Twingo stuff, same old...

Yeah mine was welding £300 cars, welding new bits onto the Spitfire and lusting over breaky BL classics.

Nothing new under the sun :)

Haha its good we have our distinct interests were into, that’s what makes this place great. I have no plans to stop faffing with little euro hatches anytime soon, just as you’ll probably keep saving £300 stuff a bit at a time.

It has reminded me of the SD1 pickup that was on eBay at the time. Damn I wanted that. Would have been seriously cool, and actually useful to boot.

I had, about this time last year, just tacked the floorboards of the Ranchero into place. I am now closing in on the last of that phase and will have a complete floorpan probably within a month. Admitted I’ve had other things on the vehicle to work on (fitting the engine, structure repair, rear diff setup, front suspension, doors, front valance, etc. etc.) but a whole *year*?

Apparently Brt was a thing last year.

Yeah last year the body was off the spitfire and I was sorting the chassis.

This year the body is still off and I’m still sorting the chassis.

Nearly done though!

Still up on the same ropes in the same position in the shed, I’d assume. Right at eyebrow height to attack any taller blokes who might wander in...

No it’s moved! It’s now sitting on axle stands right at the back while I weld on my hardtop :)

Soon it’ll be on a home-made collapsible rotisserie with a little handle to spin it round cannibalised from a £10 winch.

As soon as I've finished making that I'll post up about it as I'm very proud of how it's turning out :)

I dearly need to get my Ranchero up on something of a rotisserie nature to do some sealing and touch-ups to welds on the bottom, but that won’t be possible until I take the wheels and suspension + driveline pieces out. Too heavy otherwise.

Those things are really cool. Us British oppos have been on a pickup thing recently actually. 4muddyfeet just bought a Felicia truck and I might be looking at a 504 pickup.

I’m going to be starting something new in a few weeks that may or may not go well - tin/zinc body solder, a.k.a “leading”. Because plastic body fillers on holed and decayed metal under abuse are a fool’s errand, and if I’m learning one set of archaic bodyworking skills it’s just as well I learn them all, right? The tin alloy weighs about half what lead mixes do but costs over twice as much and has a narrow melting band to offset better sandability than lead... Advantages to either, really. I’ll keep you updated in case I accidentally get good at it.

Further to archaic body-working, I’m buying a set of lower dies at long last for my forming wheel. Should enable me to roll a curve into the outer rocker guards for the Lincoln and the rear quarter patches on the Ranchero...

Oh cool :) I’ve always wanted to give that a try.

I’ve also been on the lookout for a cheap English wheel for ages but with no luck. I think it’d be a really useful piece of kit :)

504 pickup? Hell yeah that sounds like a great idea :)

It’s only since picking up a couple of cars that are mostly disassembled that I’ve come to appreciate how useful a pickup is. I definitely need to get one at some point (better if it’s an SD1 pickup too!).

I bought my wheel for $80 from a man who’d made it - not the fanciest as a consequence (some flaws in the lower carriage), and it didn’t have any of the lower rollers but a straight one. So, I’ll be ordering a set of lowers for something like $120 and remaking the lower carriage slightly to match them.

Hmmm, that might be a better option for me than buying one, cos that’s just what I need, more things to make ;)

Would be bloody useful though...

Making your own, the part likeliest to set you back other than the dies is the top wheel, if you do the thing properly. The “cheap” way to get a top wheel is to use an industrial caster, but the best way is to lay hands on a 2" wide 8" diameter or so industrial bearing. Smooth rolling under load and a near mirror-finish perfectly true crushing surface.

Yeah the rest is just box section and tube :)

Great idea on an industrial bearing. I might see if I can get my aircraft engineer mate to see if he can purloin an old bearing from some landing gear or somesuch. I'm fairly certain they change that sort of thing on a service interval basis and I might be able to get one in good enough nick for my uses...

The drawback and advantage to a big bearing are one and the same - a good bit of rotational mass will help “hammer” the metal into the right shape and resist jamming, but will wear you out faster with pushing pieces back and forth. Nothing the right sort of rhythm won’t fix, though.

As could I, but I’ve the inborn difficulty of being a tall, strong, heavy fat bloke, so I don’t have any direct impetus of being unable to do things working against me, and the workout threshold is a bit higher to actually build anything :) That being said, my running is crap.

Yeah I look relatively lean but ask me to jog to the shops and I’ll probably collapse :S

I should really change that, but it takes time away from building rotisseries and English wheels and Spitfires and MGBs which is much more fun :)

Haha I wish I had more room or I’d have a few more vehicles. The neighbours would be pissed if I do get a project. You must buy an sd1 though, with a v8 :)

I absolutely plan to :) they’ve held their value well though so I’ll have to pick up a shed and do it up :)
